Diagnose Model X suspension clunks, sloppy handling, and uneven tire wear. Learn when a full refresh kit makes sense for 2015–early 2021 cars.

Quick answer

If your 2015–early 2021 Model X clunks over bumps, wanders on the highway, or has visibly cracked control-arm bushings, a full suspension refresh kit is usually the most efficient fix once multiple joints show wear. For a single noisy arm, replace that part alone.

Why Model X suspension wear shows up as a group

The Model X is heavy, and its front and rear suspension uses many bushings and ball joints that age together. A clunk you hear at 60,000 miles often means several joints are past their prime, not just the one making noise. That is why a refresh kit can make sense: you address the whole wear surface in one alignment and one labor session instead of chasing noises one arm at a time.

This is also the main trade-off. A full kit costs more up front and takes longer to install than a single control arm. If only one joint is bad and the rest are tight, a targeted replacement is cheaper and just as effective.

When a full refresh kit beats piecemeal repairs

Choose the kit when you plan to keep the car, when several symptoms appear together, or when a shop inspection finds play or cracked rubber at multiple points. It also helps when you want one part number and one alignment rather than repeat visits.

Skip the kit if the car is being sold soon, if only one arm is worn, or if the noise comes from air struts or sway bar links rather than control arms. Those are separate repairs and a refresh kit will not fix them.

Symptom-to-action diagnosis

  • Clunk or knock over bumps: Inspect front and rear control arm bushings and ball joints for cracks or play. If one joint is loose, replace that arm. If several are worn, plan a refresh kit. A single clunk does not automatically justify a full kit.
  • Sloppy handling or wandering: Check tire pressures and alignment first. If alignment will not hold, inspect control arm bushings and ball joints for excessive movement. Alignment that keeps drifting points to worn suspension parts, not just a bad alignment setting.
  • Uneven or feathered tire wear: Have a shop measure suspension play. Worn control arm bushings can cause irregular wear that a new set of tires will not fix. Replace worn parts before buying tires, or the new tires will wear the same way.
  • Noise from air struts or sway bar links: A refresh kit does not include air struts. If the noise comes from the strut area or the sway bar links, diagnose those separately. Stop here and choose a strut or sway bar repair instead of a control arm kit.
  • When to stop and choose another option: If only one joint is worn, or the car is leaving your ownership soon, replace the single part. A full kit is for cars with multiple worn joints that you plan to keep.
